Freight vs. Parcel: When LTL Beats UPS Ground

The crossover point where LTL freight becomes cheaper than parcel shipping, with example math for ecommerce brands.

Parcel — the UPS Ground, FedEx, USPS world — is built for one or a few packages at a time. Freight (specifically LTL, less-than-truckload) is built for multiple boxes or pallets. The dividing line is fuzzier than most founders realize, and most brands ship parcel well past the point where freight would be cheaper.

    When parcel makes sense

    • Single boxes under 70 lbs.
    • Direct-to-consumer orders.
    • Anything that needs to fit standard residential delivery.
    • Time-sensitive shipments where 1–3 day transit matters.

    When LTL freight wins

    • Multiple boxes going to the same destination.
    • Anything palletized.
    • Restock shipments to a retailer or your own 3PL.
    • Shipments over ~150 lbs total.
    • Bulk inventory transfers between facilities.

    The crossover math

Rough rule of thumb: if you're shipping more than 4–6 boxes (or 150+ lbs) to a single address, get an LTL quote alongside the parcel quote. The LTL quote is almost always lower above that threshold.

Example: shipping 8 boxes at 30 lbs each from Ohio to a Brooklyn retailer. Parcel total via UPS Ground might run $280–340. The same shipment palletized and sent LTL might be $180–220. The savings widen as box count grows.

Why brands stay on parcel too long

    1. LTL feels intimidating — pallets, BOLs, freight class, accessorials.
    2. Shopify and most ecom tools quote parcel automatically; freight requires a phone call or quote tool.
    3. The first LTL invoice has line items parcel doesn't (liftgate, residential, fuel surcharge) that look scary.
    4. Founders default to what they know.

None of those are good reasons. They're just friction. A good 3PL or freight broker handles the paperwork; you just provide the destination and the contents.

    Freight class, demystified

LTL pricing is based on freight class — a number from 50 (dense, easy to handle) to 500 (light, fragile, awkward). Lower class = cheaper. Most palletized ecommerce inventory falls in class 70–125. Your supplier or 3PL can tell you the class for your products.

    Watch for accessorials

The base LTL rate is just the start. Common adders that surprise first-timers:

    • Liftgate service: ~$75–125 if the destination doesn't have a loading dock.
    • Residential delivery: ~$100–150.
    • Inside delivery: extra.
    • Limited access (storage units, schools, construction sites): extra.
    • Fuel surcharge: a percentage on top of base, varies weekly.

Get an all-in quote, not a base rate. The base rate alone is misleading.

    The takeaway

If you're shipping bulk to retailers, doing inventory transfers, or sending more than a few boxes to one place, you're probably overpaying on parcel. Get one LTL quote per type of shipment and compare. The savings often pay for the time it takes to learn the system.
